A remarkable display of medical expertise and teamwork helped save the hand of a 35-year-old industrial accident victim after doctors at Shalby Hospital, SG Highway, Ahmedabad, successfully performed a complex hand replantation surgery through advanced microsurgical techniques.
The patient was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after his left hand was completely amputated at the mid-palm level during an industrial accident. As the amputated hand had been properly preserved in ice and brought along with the patient, doctors immediately initiated emergency surgery. The nearly seven-hour procedure was led by Dr. Hardik Dodia, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon, Dr. Keyur Patel, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon, and Dr. Anup Karketta, Orthopaedic Surgeon, with support from specialists in Orthopaedics, Anaesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, and the Operating Theatre.
Although the middle, ring, and little fingers could not be salvaged due to irreversible damage, the remaining portion of the hand was successfully replanted after meticulous reconstruction of bones, blood vessels, tendons, and other vital structures. A second surgery was performed five days later for soft tissue coverage.
The replanted hand is now healthy, with good blood circulation and encouraging early signs of finger movement. This successful procedure highlights Shalby Hospital’s expertise in managing complex trauma cases through advanced surgical care, multidisciplinary collaboration, and timely intervention, giving the patient a renewed opportunity to regain hand function and independence.
