Cryopreservation of Semen and Embryo
Semen sample can be cryopreserved for the future usage. Generally we prefer to freeze one semen sample beforehand so as to assure availability of husband’s sperm at the time of egg retrieval. One or more semen sample can be preserved for IVF or IUI when husband is not able to attend Infertility clinic every now and then.
Patient diagnosed to have testicular cancer or undergoing Chemotherapy or pelvic radiotherapy should cryopreserve as many semen samples as possible. These semen samples can be used in future for IUI, IVF or ICSI.
Cryopreservation of Embryo
Supernumerary good embryos after an IVF cycle are cryopreserved for the future usage. These embryos can be utilized for next IVF cycle if the fresh cycle fails or can be utilized for second pregnancy.
For a Frozen thaw embryo transfer cycle, the patient does not need to undergo ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval procedures. Endometrial preparation done with hormonal tablets and monitored and once the endometrium is adequate in thickness, volume with good blood flow, embryos can be transferred under cover of progestational support.
The success rate of a frozen thaw embryo transfer cycle is little lower than that of a fresh cycle.
