Celebrating Nutrients Awareness Week: The Building Blocks of Good Health

What Are Nutrients?

Nutrients are substances found in food that our bodies need to operate properly. They give us energy, assist in tissue building and repair, and control various body systems. Macronutrients and micronutrients are two general divisions of nutrients.

1. Macronutrients: Our bodies need large amounts of these nutrients. They include carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Each plays a distinct role in our body:

  • Carbohydrates are the primary source of energy. Foods include fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes.
  • Proteins are essential for building and repairing tissues. They are found in foods such as meat, dairy products, almonds, and legumes.
  • Fats are crucial for energy storage, hormone production, and organ protection. Avocados, nuts, seeds, and fish all contain healthy fats.

2. Micronutrients: These are nutrients that our bodies need in smaller amounts but are equally important. They include vitamins and minerals:

  • Vitamins help with various functions, such as vision, bone health, and immune function. For example, vitamin A is essential for eye health, while vitamin D supports bone health.
  • Minerals like calcium, potassium, and iron are crucial in maintaining our body’s balance and overall health. Calcium is vital for bone health, potassium helps regulate fluid balance and muscle contractions, and iron is essential for blood production.

The Importance of a Balanced Diet

Eating a well-balanced diet guarantees that your body receives the correct combination of nutrients. Maintaining good health depends mainly on a diet heavy on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and beneficial fats. Furthermore, knowledge of the interactions among all the nutrients is crucial. For example, vitamin D improves the absorption of calcium, which is vital for bone health.

Nonetheless, it is not unusual to find people who, while seeking medical attention for another problem, turn out to have underlying problems like starvation or anemia. This is particularly common in those with a low socioeconomic level, dietary constraints, or chronic diseases compromising nutritional absorption. Typical symptoms include tiredness, weakness, headaches, or vertigo, which usually result in a diagnosis at a regular visit or blood test.

Nutrient Deficiency brought on by Junk/Outside Food

Particularly in metropolitan regions where fast food and processed foods are easily available, the frequency of nutritional deficit brought on by the intake of outside or junk food is noteworthy. Though high in calories, many foods lack essential minerals, vitamins, and fiber. Regularly eating such foods might cause shortages in essential minerals like iron, calcium, and vitamin D. Globally, this is a rising issue influencing people from all backgrounds.

Nutritional Value of the Gujarati Diet

The Gujarati diet is usually balanced and healthy, mainly if it comprises a range of vegetables and pulses. Staples like dal (lentils), bhat (rice), Shak (vegetables), roti (flatbread), and khichdi (a blend of rice and lentils) provides a good mix of carbs, proteins, and necessary vitamins and minerals, making it a nutritious option.

Other Tips for Nutrients-Rich Eating

  • Eat a Rainbow: Incorporate a variety of fruits and vegetables in your diet. Different colors indicate different nutrients, so the more colors on your plate, the better.
  • Choose Whole Grains: Choose whole grains over processed ones to get more fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
  • Include Healthy Fats: Don’t shy away from fats; choose healthy sources like olive oil, nuts, seeds, and avocados.
  • Stay Hydrated: Water is crucial for nutrient absorption and overall health. Therefore, it’s important to maintain good hydration throughout the day.
  • Limit Processed Foods: Processed foods often lack essential nutrients and are high in sodium, sugar, and unhealthy fats. It’s important to limit their consumption for a healthier diet.
