Neurosurgery - Brain Tumor Treatment

A brain tumor is a group of abnormal cells that develop in the brain. These abnormal cells are powerful enough to destroy healthy brain cells as well. Brain tumors are of different types. Some of these tumors can be malignant (cancerous), whereas, others are benign (non-cancerous). A cancerous tumor grows quickly and often affects the healthy brain areas as well. In other words, non-cancerous tumors don’t have cancer cells and generally they grow slowly.

Brain tumors can start in your brain as a primary tumor or a cancer that originates in other body parts can spread to your brain in which case it is referred to as metastatic or secondary brain tumor. The impact of the tumor on your nervous system depends on its location and growth rate.

Department of Micro-Neurosurgery

Neurosurgery comprises of surgery of the brain, spine, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. With the advancement of operating microscopes, neurosurgeons can now perform complex brain surgeries.

Chronic conditions like Trigeminal Neuralgia which requires lifelong medication, can now be cured with Micro-Neuro surgery. Complex tumours have been eradicated without any damage to the brain or any other part. Complex tumours in elderly patients have also been treated successfully. Such outcomes are possible only with team ofskilled & dedicated surgeons, nursing & paramedical staff, regular training and continued medical and surgical updates like we do in Shalby Hospitals

Brain Tumor Treatments

There are various treatment options for brain tumor. Doctors recommend the right treatment depending on many factors, including:

  • the grade, type and size of the tumor
  • the location and growth rate of the tumor
  • whether the tumor is pressurizing other vital brain parts
  • whether the tumor has spread to other parts of the body
  • the patient’s overall health

After considering all these factors, your doctor will discuss the feasible treatment options.

The different brain tumor treatment options are discussed in detail below.

Surgery

Surgery is the most recommended treatment for brain tumor patients. A neurosurgeon tries to remove the entire tumor without damaging the healthy brain parts. If the surgeon is not able to remove the tumor completely without causing damage to the healthy brain cells, he will remove as much as possible. Sometimes, if the tumor is located in areas that limit access, the surgeons may not be able to remove the tumor completely. However, partial removal also benefits by relieving the symptoms by decreasing the pressure on the brain and also decreases the amount of tumor to be treated by chemotherapy or radiation therapy
During surgery, a few advanced techniques are also used. For instance, brain mapping is used to detect functional paths near the tumors, while endoscopy helps to do biopsies and open up spinal fluid paths via a tiny scope. Intra-operative MRI can also be used to maximize the removal of tumors.

Radiation Therapy

In radiation therapy or radiotherapy, high-powered rays are used to damage the cancer cells and cease their growth. This treatment helps in destroying the tumor tissues that are not removable through surgery or to kill the cancerous cells that may still remain after surgery. Radiotherapy is also used in cases where surgery is not a feasible option.
There are many ways in which radiotherapy can be given:

  • External Radiation Treatment: External radiations are guided from a huge machine to treat just the tumor while protecting the nearby healthy tissues. If the tumor has spread to the nearby tissues or the whole brain, then the radiations are directed accordingly. This treatment is given for five days every week for many weeks, though the schedule depends on the type of tumor and its size.
  • Implant Radiation Therapy: Radiations are guided from a radioactive material that is placed directly in the tumor. The implant could be left in the brain permanently or for a short time based on the material used.
  • Gamma Knife: Also called stereotactic radio surgery, this single-session radiotherapy technique delivers a finely focused, single, high radiation dose accurately to its target from several angles. Thus, a high dose of radiation treats the tumor without damaging the healthy brain tissues.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses either a single drug or a combination of drugs to destroy the cancerous cells. These drugs are given orally or injected into the cerebrospinal fluid. Chemotherapy treatment is generally administered in cycles. There’s a recovery period that follows every treatment period and then the next treatment cycle starts. In an advanced chemotherapy treatment method called convection-enhanced delivery, the drugs are placed directly into the tumor cavity.

Traumatic Brain Injury & Its Impact on Brain

Traumatic brain injury happens when a sudden, powerful blow or jolt to your head or body causes damage to your brain. In such cases, the brain collides with your skull which apparently results in nerve fibre tear and bleeding. The injury can even happen when any object like a bullet... Read More
