Despite having a regular brushing routine that may include rinsing/ washing with water every time after a meal or flossing teeth, there is every chance that food debris remains in the mouth. Bacteria react with such debris in the mouth to form a soft slippery layer termed plaque. Over a period of time, plaque hardens to form a chalk like substance called tartar or calculus. No amount of brushing can get rid of tartar/ calculus. Regular intake of tea or coffee, smoking and stain-inducing foods like betel nut, red wine and spices like turmeric tend to stain the teeth too.
