Blood Cancer – A growing burden to Indian Society

India is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, with a population of over 1.3 billion people. However, this economic and demographic growth also brings many challenges for the healthcare system, especially in terms of managing the burden of non-communicable diseases such as cancer. Cancer is a leading cause of death and disability in India, affecting millions of people every year. Among the various types of cancer, blood cancer is a significant health issue that needs more attention and awareness.

What is Blood Cancer?

Blood cancer is a general term that refers to cancers that affect the blood cells or the bone marrow, where blood cells are produced. Blood cells include red blood cells that carry oxygen, white blood cells that fight infections, and platelets that help with blood clotting. Blood cancer occurs when some of these cells become abnormal and grow out of control, interfering with the normal function of the blood and the immune system.

Blood Cancer- Alarming Situation in India

According to various sources, India ranks third highest in the world in terms of reported cases of blood cancer, after the US and China. Every 5 minutes, someone in India is diagnosed with blood cancer, and an estimated 70,000 people die every year because of blood cancer.

There are three main types of blood cancer : leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. Each of these types has different subtypes, symptoms, causes, and treatments. Leukemia is India’s most common type of blood cancer, accounting for over half of all cases. Lymphoma and Myeloma are also prevalent, with increasing incidence rates in recent years.

Blood Cancer- Diagnosis and Treatment

Many times, delays in diagnosis are because of ignorance or lack of access to healthcare and blood cancer treatment facilities, especially in rural areas. Patients may not receive a timely diagnosis or appropriate treatment due to financial constraints or limited access to medical care.

However, recent advancements in blood cancer management have changed the scenario. With more readily available testing/diagnostic modalities & access to effective drugs and therapies available in government and private blood cancer treatment centres including treatment in the form of stem cell transplants, can significantly improve the survival rates of blood cancer patients.

Dr. Aishwarya Raj, Haematologist, at Shalby Hospitals, said, “The stigma associated with cancer in some Indian communities may prevent individuals from seeking medical help. Additionally, the emotional and psychological impact of a blood cancer diagnosis can be significant, and support services are often lacking. This affects a lot in timely treatment because many sympathise but very few empathize.”

A minimum of 30% of the future cancer burden can be preventable if we take necessary measure in the early stages. From tobacco sale and consumption control, dietary changes, expansion and equal distribution of medical facilities, to awareness and education programs about risks, prevention, and stem cell donation, a lot can be done to minimise the rise of blood cancer in India. There are around 70 % of blood cancers which doesn’t have any specific reasons to occur.

Blood Cancer Reasons

There are certain factors that contribute to blood cancer: Age and Cancer: Cancer can affect anyone, but some types like leukaemia are more common in kids under 14 or adults over 40. It’s good for older people to have yearly blood tests to catch any early signs of cancer.

Tobacco and Cancer: Smoking tobacco is harmful. It weakens your body’s defence system and changes your DNA, which can lead to cancer.

Alcohol and Cancer: Drinking too much alcohol can mess up the creation of new cells in your bone marrow, which can lead to cancer.

Radiation, Chemicals, and Cancer: In a fast-growing country like India, people are more exposed to harmful radiation and chemicals. These can change your DNA and increase your chances of getting blood cancer.

Family History and Cancer: If your family has had blood diseases before, you might also show signs of blood cancer. This shows that our family’s past can affect our present health.
