Shoulder & Small Joint

Shoulder & Small Joint

Shoulder Injury & Trauma

Shoulder trauma is not an uncommon condition, especially, these days. Trauma can be caused by a range of injuries like a fall on the shoulder or injuries resulting from road accidents. These injuries can lead to fractures of shoulder blade (scapula) or collarbone (clavicle); sometimes the arm bone can also get dislocated.

Shoulder Anatomy

  • Arm bone (Humerus)
  • Scapula (Shoulder blade)
  • Clavicle (Collar bone)

These bones together contribute to the functional movement of arm. These bones are connected to each other with soft tissues.

Shoulder consists of three joints:

  • Glenohumeral joint
  • Sternoclavicular joint
  • Acromioclavicular joint

Types of Shoulder Injuries

  • Fractures
  • Dislocation of joints
  • Soft tissues injuries

Symptoms of Shoulder Injury

  • Pain in the shoulder
  • Swelling of the shoulder region
  • Difficulty in moving the shoulder
  • Crackling of bones in the shoulder
  • Externally visible protrusions in the region

Diagnosis of a Shoulder Injury

Most of the shoulder injuries can be diagnosed with the help of X-ray, whereas,  in certain cases,  advanced imaging techniques can be used.

Post operative care

Shoulder injuries take several weeks or months to heal and recover. Most of the shoulder treatments are either surgical or non-surgical. This makes the shoulder to be immobile for sometime which is followed by rehabilitation.

Small Joints

Wrist, fingers, elbow, ankles and foot are made up of complex small joints.

Fractures and arthritis of small joints can cause extreme pain and affect the movements of the bones.

Symptoms

  • Inflammation/pain
  • Weakness in the joint
  • Swelling
  • Stiffness

Diagnosis

X-rays help in determining the stage of arthritis and identifying fractures.

Blood tests can help detect rheumatoid and other inflammatory arthritis. Osteoarthritis is not related to blood abnormalities.
