- Intragastric Balloon :
The Intra Gastric Balloon is a soft, expandable, silicone balloon that is placed inside the stomach via endoscopy. This creates a feeling of fullness for the patient and does not allow for overeating, therefore allowing the patient to effectively diet without feeling continuously hungry.
Surgical Treatment for Obesity
- Bariatric Surgery or Metabolic Surgery :
In layman’s language, bariatric surgery or metabolic surgery is an effective weight-loss surgery that alters the size of your stomach and changes the configuration of your digestive system. This helps to treat metabolic disorders due to obesity like type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and premature heart disease, etc. Bariatric surgery is the only proven method of weight loss for severe or morbid obesity.
Types of Obesity Surgery
At our obesity surgery centre at Shalby Hospitals, we perform minimally invasive or laparoscopic bariatric surgery which is far better than open surgery.
- Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy:
Sleeve Gastrectomy is one of the most commonly performed procedures for weight loss surgery. In this surgery 75- 80% of the stomach is removed; leaving a tube-sized stomach; shaped like a sleeve. This smaller size of the stomach reduces the appetite and results in weight loss.
In addition to this, the hormone ghrelin is abolished. This hormone is responsible for sending signals to the brain to eat more. Once the hormone ghrelin is reduced and due to hormone reset; it leads to a reduction in weight over some time and also causes a reduction in co-morbidities like Blood Pressure, Diabetes Type 2, Thyroid and Sleep Apnea.
-
Laparoscopic Mini Gastric Bypass:
Mini Gastric Bypass surgery is also a weight loss surgery, restricting the volume of food. The new stomach is separated and connected to the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine.
In the Mini Gastric Bypass volume of the new pouch created is 100ml whereas, in the Gastric Bypass stomach can be filled in 25-30ml. Also, in Mini Gastric Bypass complications are less compared and hospital stay is less compared to Gastric Bypass.
Bariatric surgery is recommended by doctors as a first-line option for the treatment of obesity for candidates with BMI >35 with or without co-morbidities. Mini gastric bypass or bariatric surgery is recommended for > BMI 30 for patients who have Type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and obesity-related comorbidities.
- Laparoscopic RY Gastric Bypass :
Gastric bypass also known as Roux-en-Y is a type of bariatric surgery where stomach is divided into 2 parts by stapling, thereby creating a pouch and reducing its size. This small pouch is then connected directly to small intestine; food when swallowed first goes to the small pouch of the stomach and then directly to small intestine bypassing a major part of your stomach.
Gastric bypass surgery is the most popular weight loss surgery. Gastric bypass reduces its total volume so that a person cannot eat more and gradually loses weight due to lack of calories, feeling constantly full. Gastric bypass is advantageous for fast weight loss, which can continue up to 2 years after surgery; with very low possibilities to regain weight.
Gastric Bypass surgery is suggested for weight loss for the patients falling under following categories
-BMI above 40 without co-morbidities
-BMI 35-39.99 with co-morbidities like Type 2 Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Heart disease, Osteoarthritis, Sleep Apnea and Breathing problems
-BMI 30-34.99 with serious health related issues or two or more co morbidities
