Laparoscopic Surgery – A Boon

Several misconceptions and myths are prevailing about laparoscopic surgeries, though it is the most advanced and safe amongst surgical procedures. These surgeries are performed through small incisions on the body which limits blood loss and the patient recovers fast and returns to normal life in a very short span of time.

Laparoscopes are of two types, the first one being Telescope Rod Lens System fitted with a single or three chip video camera. The second type is a digital laparoscope fitted with a digital camera. Telescope Rod Lens System is more popular due to its better image quality.

Advantages of Laparoscopic Surgeries:

Laparoscopic surgeries are less painful due to small incisions (cut) which results in less blood loss, shorter hospital stay, and faster recovery. It leaves no scar at the site of the incision. The possibility of infection is also near to nil in this procedure. Due to keyhole incision, it reduces the chances of hernia occurrence, post-surgery, and laparoscopic surgeries are less costly and affordable.

Types of Laparoscopic Surgeries:

Appendicectomy:

In this procedure, 2-3 incisions are done in the stomach to remove the affected appendix. The patient can be discharged from the hospital just in 2 days, post-surgery.

Cholecystectomy:

This procedure is commonly known as Gall Bladder removal due to stone formation. Normally it requires 4 small incisions.

Hernia Repair:

In simple terms, an internal organ which bulge or break through the weaker walls of the stomach is known as a hernia. Laparoscopic hernia surgery not only helps in placing the organs at their original sites but with the help of a net, the weaker walls of the stomach are also strengthened. The patient can be discharged from the hospital after 2-3 days of the surgery.

PPH (Postpartum Haemorrhage):

Cases of grade 3 & 4 Piles and Fissures are treated with a round stapler gun which restricts the blood flow to a greater extent. This procedure also reduces the post-operative discomforts and leaves no scar at the site of the procedure.

Total Hysterectomy:

This is a procedure followed for uterus removal, involving 3 to 4 small incisions and the internal vaginal vessel is also closed laparoscopically. This surgery leaves no scar and also reduces the chance of post-operative hernia.

Ovarian Cystectomy:

The cyst in both the ovaries of a female patient is removed through this procedure through a single incision. The patient gets back to normal life quickly.

Diagnostic Laparoscopy:

Apart from performing surgery on the affected internal organ, laparoscopy also helps in patient examination for infertility, TB, Biopsy, etc.

Varicocelectomy:

The ligation of both the testicles are done simultaneously through this procedure with reduced blood loss.

Surgeries that can be performed laparoscopically:

With advanced technology, experience, and expertise, Laparoscopic spleen removal is done. TB of the large intestine and cancer surgeries are also performed laparoscopically (Right/Left Haemicolectomy).

Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS):

With the advancement in technology, some surgeries, requiring pinpoint precision like Gall Bladder Stone removal, Appendicitis, Ovarian Cyst removal, are performed by single incision technique, today. Such surgeries are also known as “Reduced Port Surgery”.

Till recent times, Laparoscopic Surgery was considered ‘unsafe’ for pregnant women but with the new technique and availability of special instrumentation, laparoscopic surgeries are successfully done even in the second trimester of pregnancy today.
