MBBS, MS, MChEmail:Department:
Liver Diseases and Liver Transplant
Dr Vinay Kumaran did his MBBS and MS (Surgery) from Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi.
He was a Senior Resident at University College of Medical Sciences, Delhi
He did an M Ch in Gastrointestinal Surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi
He was a Research Associate at the Marion Bessin Liver Research Institute of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York. His work in the lab with Professor Sanjeev Gupta included demonstrating that Factor VIII is produced by liver sinusoidal endothelial cells and not by hepatocytes and that transplantation of these LSECs can cure haemophilia in a mouse model. He also developed techniques to isolate LSECs from mice and to improve engraftment of hepatocytes in rats using extracellular matrix components. His research has been published in some of the most high-impact journal in medicine such as Nature Medicine, Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
He did a Multi-organ Transplant Fellowship at the Thomas E Starzl Transplantation Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He trained in liver, kidney, pancreas, intestinal and multi-visceral transplants in adults as well as pediatric patients.
He was Consultant Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplantation and later Director, Liver Transplant at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital where he was involved in many innovative procedures such as:
The first dual lobe living donor liver transplant in India
The first combined liver and kidney living donor transplant in India
The first living donor domino liver transplant in India
The first paired donor exchange in India
The first living donor intestinal transplant in India
The first successful living donor cavo-portal transposition in an adult with extensive mesenteric venous thrombosis in India
In 2013, he moved to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai to set up a new liver transplant program which soon became the first high-volume living donor liver transplant program in Western India. Among the innovations at this center were:
A very successful ABO incompatible living donor liver transplant program
The (then) youngest successful living donor liver transplant in Western India in a one-year old baby from Indore
The first successful dual lobe living donor transplant in Western India
The first simultaneous living donor liver transplant and bariatric surgery in India (ref 13 below)
He and his team have described some of the crucial techniques in living donor liver transplantation (mentioned in selected publications below) with some of the best outcomes.
He is the author and editor of a book “Techniques of Liver Surgery” which is read worldwide by liver surgeons.
He wrote the Indian guidelines for liver transplantation in liver cancer (ref 11 below)
