Critical care is a specialized care given to a patient suffering from a life-threatening disease and who needs constant monitoring and comprehensive care. Complications from a surgery, accidents, infections and severe breathing problems fall under the critical care list which need close and constant attention, by a team of specially-trained healthcare providers. Using advanced technologies and modern equipments, the objective of a Critical Care Unit (CCU) is to maintain the functioning of the organ system and improve the patient’s condition, such that his or her underlying injury or illness can be treated.

Life of a patient under critical care can either win the battle or succumb to death. Critical care usually takes place in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or a trauma centre, where every life-saving machine like Intravenous (IV) tubes, feeding tubes, catheters, breathing machines etc. are monitored with a 24 hour surveillance.

Critical care nursing is a very challenging field. One needs to be highly skilled and trained, with all the medical knowledge, as the life of a patient is fully dependent on the machines inside an Intensive Care Unit.

The major role in the critical care of a patient is done by an Intensivist, a board-certified physician, who specializes in the care of critically ill patients, also known as a critical care physician. The intensivist has advanced training and experience in treating any complex type of patients.
